Hella Town: Oakland's History of Development and Disruption
This will be a HYBRID event, both online and in-person, hosted by the AIA East Bay Regional & Urban Design (RUD) Forum, in partnership with Marcus Books. It will kick off with an introduction by Mayor Schaaf. Author, Mitchell Schwarzer is Professor of Architectural and Urban History at the California College of the Arts, Oakland and San Francisco. The event will be moderated by Director William Gilchrist, who has 35 years of experience as a planner and designer.
Often overshadowed by San Francisco, its larger and more glamorous twin, Oakland has a fascinating history of its own. From serving as a major transportation hub to forging a dynamic manufacturing sector, by the mid-twentieth century Oakland had become the urban center of the East Bay.
